I guess i will update you on the doctor's appointment. The baby may or may not have shrunk. He was very wiggley so the doctor had to remeasure him. the doc gave him a little more than the nurse did. What is certain is that he didn't grow much or gain any weight. But his head grew. So now his head really is too big for his body. Poor kid. At least he's smart?
Recent developments in his behavior include: eating anything so long as we say "Mmmmm" as we spoon it into his mouth; army crawling - fast, especially when a cord is involved; "bababababa blabla ba"; hitting; throwing; pinching; attacking my slippers; attacking the vacuum; licking the tile floor; his second cold; winter congestion; laughing at everything when he's tired; shaking his head to the beat of his music and doing a weird screeching sound when the music has singing; likes the cold weather outside (is he really my child?); and loves being carried upside-down. He is very much a boy.
Last week my parents came into town with my sister and brother. It was so nice to have them, especially because they entertained me and sean and there was always something to do. I went to Target and got cheap ornaments with my mom. So cute. I want to go get my tree from the street corner and redecorate it because a year is just too long! My dad got some random things done around the house and figured out what the deal is with the van. Hopefully it's just the cheaper of the two possibilities. sigh. the husband and i took my brother and sister out for lunch and sledding. I loved it. It was freezing cold, but I am glad we got to play with just them for a little while.
Christmas was lovely. We sat late at night and looked at our tree and the lights and snuggled and then woke up promptly at 7:45 to Sean practicing his vowels in his crib. So I pounced brian and we got up and got the baby. Just in case you were all wondering, our baby preferred his toys to the boxes and wrapping paper. This may be because I had been letting his play with wrapping paper for 3 weeks already? Whatevs. It was fun teaching him how to unwrap the boxes. My favorite thing that i gave to brian was a USDS map of Tennessee. it is huge. it is the length of all three of our couch cushions. LOL. And I got the TALES OF BEEDLE THE BARD. Woohoo! And Brisingr, but that is from my parents.
Shoe update: My mom bought be the two cutest pairs of shoes ever. i loved them so much that i wore one on each foot. I no longer need new shoes. Maybe walking shoes. But those can wait for now. Yippee! So now my dear friends, I am no longer suffering from need of cute shoes. Maybe I'll give back the pair i swiped from my sister at Thanksgiving. If she lets me borrow her coat, because it is the cutest coat.
Please don't exploit my weakness for cute shoes and cute coats. It's just not right.
My sister decided i have good taste in skirts and is attempting to commandeer my new pink one. I told her she can borrow it when I'm pregnant again and can't fit in it. I should maybe make her trade it for the coat, because it is all loose and stuff with a high waist (make sense?) and would work for my huge belly babes. Plus she's in AZ, what does she need a coat for? Snowboarding? Like she's gonna wear a cute coat like that to snowboard. That would be foolish.
Ahem. So, the Brian and i had our anniversary. We dined, i got flowers, and we played games with each other for an hour. It was lovely. I love having him all to myself. It's so fun when I'm not overtired or stressed, like we're all dating and stuff again. He even got off of work a little early. Fabulous! I'm in love.
Maybe i'll stop being lazy and get some pictures up in my next post. Maybe.

new pictures
I know it's been a while and let's be honest, my kid is adorable. So here you go, updated pictures. :) oh, and quick sleep update - he no longer sleeps on his tummy. since he can roll over, he always rolls on his left side now. with the blankets over his face. just like his dad.
Wrapped in a TN Vols toga. Daddy's so proud.

He likes to lick things. Pretty sure it's his way of saying hello.
Maybe he is a fan of tasted-identification.
Future chef?

Me and baby at the Mesa Temple waiting for my cousin to come out.
This is my new haircut. Thanks Brianna! Can't wait 'til May!

That's all. Some of his personality quirks are, again, that he has to taste everything, he does this funky eyebrow raise at me all the time (especially when he knows he's naughty), and mauls my shoulder whenever i go get him after a nap. Or maybe he's just trying to wipe his runny nose on me. He also loves being roughed up by Brian and licking the pages of his books. Reading time usually goes something like this: turn the page, attack and lick the page, repeat.
We go to the doctor today for a check up, so i guess i'll post those stats later. I'm just hoping he doesn't try to grab the needle or lick the nurse/PA.

Letting it Snow
There are many songs, stories and feelings about snow. Growing up in Arizona, I always wished that I could be surrounded by snow in the winter, that a little more sparkle could be given to the drab cold that comes with the season. It was just somehow not right that I never got a snowday at school or got to build my own Frosty the Snowman. "Unjust!" I would think to myself.
Fast forward to college. That first snowfall was magical. I couldn't believe it! I was living in a place that snows! My roommate and I ran outside and took a picture of us in the "snow." It was a phenomenon and we were so excited. And then the thermostat went below 30 degrees and the snow stuck. I could still get excited about it, but I was less enthusiastic about the whole thing. It was cold and I hate being cold - it hurts worse when you stub you toe, among other things like ice and wetness.
I feel like I did my best to make snow the magical thing I wished it was. I tried frolicking with my roommates in it, snowball fighting, sliding in the slush, and sledding. All was fruitless. I'm too clumsy for snow. It makes me trip, slip and fall (more than usual). As much as I have tried to laugh at my clumsiness, it's always embarrassing to me, so now I just tread heavily as i attempt to gain traction on my merry way. **Sidenote - i think that I have a fear of snow from all of those movies about how the husband/father/mother/child dies in an icy carwreck on Christmas Eve. Remind me how that's a good plot?**
Anyway, this year I have decided to come to terms with snow in all of its slushy, cold glory. For the sake of my kids I will embrace the idea that snow is fun and not everybody is embarrassed when they fall down. Geez, it's like i'm five and don't want people to think I'm a baby and can't walk. Whatever. I am going to wear boots so I will not fall and only leave the house when I absolutely have to and MAKE SNOW ROMANTIC BY DRINKING HOT CHOCOLATE. With marshmallows.
I am open to suggestions on how to make snow more fun or romantical.

Shopping.
I am so done with present purchasing! Bless you Target and your fantastic sale items! It was worth the extra $5 to buy there over WalMart* - less crowded, the people are paid better, and my delusion that their stuff is better quality. I am done with the stocking stuffers, done with my family gifts, done with brian's stuff, and I don't have to buy anything for Sean until next Christmas (except next year's winter clothings...) Am i good or what! We even have my MIL's birthday gift taken care of.
Ok, so we have Dad G and Grandpa G and Grandma Avery, but i'm really only not set up for a gift for Grandpa G. He's hard to shop for. Especially because he's 100 3/4 years old and doesn't want anything except to not have to wear his hearing aids when he doesn't want to. LOL Maybe a magnifying glass with a light so he can read the paper better?
Is it just me, or do the older ladies seem to take up entire aisles at the grocery store? (by older, i don't necessarily mean age - more like how old they act or feel?) Or meander around the middle of the aisle. or park their cart in front of the end of the aisle so you can't get out. I swear that happened to me at least 7 times today. I can understand moms with crazy hooligans running around doing this because their distracted, but the old ones are alone and really shouldn't take up that much space. Right?
Or maybe i'm just being disrespectful. Maybe they just need their space now that they have the option.

Cats
There are three cats that live in our little condo neighborhood. One lives next door with the person Brian and I love to hate on (don't judge, you would too). The other two I have no idea where, just that their owners are very near.
These cats must hate each other. Especially the two against next door lady's cat. They all definitely seem to have issues with boundaries. At least once a week they decide that they need to have a rumble. This rumble either happens in or around the tree in front of our house, or the tree in our backyard. Always when it's the middle of the night or when Sean is napping.
Question: Why our house?
Question #2: Are the feelings of the two cats indicative of what others feel toward next door lady?
Next door lady is not very considerate of her neighbors. She is loud. The people who come over to her place are loud. We try to say hi to her and she turns her back on us. I don't think she takes very good care of herself. Some say she does some drugginess. Her cat is unkempt. The cat always comes and meows at our door when she doesn't let "him?" in after letting "him?" out.
I almost feel bad that I'm casting judgement. It's funny that she's like this because the people who sold us the place said she was nice. Boy were we suckers! They lied about a lot of things. Anyway, that's another blog post (maybe). With her disregard to other people's sleeping habits and the HOA rules (like not smoking), it's hard to like her. So she's selling the place now.
But will her moving away make the cat fights cease? Will the cats stop lurking in my trees in hope of picking a fight with the fuzzy hair cat? Will there be a new cat to have territorial issues with?

it has to be said.
After that warm and fuzzy post about Christmas, i have to write about something that bothers me to no end.
The song.
"The Christmas Shoes"
If you've never heard of it, feel blessed. In fact, assume that you have been blessed once for every time they play it anywhere on the radio. That would make it a ba-jillion times you have received this specific blessing.
Now, before you accuse me of being a terrible person for hating on the little boy who wants to buy shoes for his dying-perhaps-already-dead mother, I will list my grievances. (I assume by the nature of this song that the mother is on her death bed, seeing as the crooner emphasizes that she might "meet Jesus tonight.")
1. It was written specifically for the purpose of making people cry. According to Wikipedia "In Tom Reynolds 2006 book I Hate Myself and Want to Die: The 52 Most Depressing Songs You've Ever Heard, he names "The Christmas Shoes" as the most depressing song in modern recorded music history." Tom Reynolds is now my favorite author.
2. The song implies that the boy loves his mother, but only thinks that Jesus finds her beautiful when she is wearing new shoes.
3. Why isn't the little boy WITH his DYING MOTHER? I mean honestly. She could be all alone, by herself, and he's buying her shoes that she'll maybe never see. It might be just me, but when i'm dying i would like my little boy with me every moment possible. the end.
4. I must agree with The Jolly Porter on everything he says in this post. (do read, very funny)
5. Where did the children's choir come from? My word, if that doesn't make me cry it's because i'm cringing, writhing on the ground, or grinding my teeth.
Now all of you who look forward to this song every five minutes probably think i'm a terrible person. But just you wait until i do a post on how I feel about LDS Fiction (novels)! *shudder* (btw, i do not think less of any of you who like it. i do not judge people by what they read in their leisure time. just don't expect me to have read the latest jack weyland or gerald lund, ok?) For those of you unacquainted with this genre, please don't worry about it. All you need to know is that I don't like it all that much.
I also hate Thomas Hardy. But that's because the man had no heart or soul.

The Things I Love About Christmas
I love the tree. This year Brian got a permit to help the forest rangers deforest. This means he's cutting down a tree for our living room. So cool! I don't know if we'll do that every year, but the tree is my favorite tradition at Christmas. Us kids would always help my mom, fight over who got to put up the favorite ornaments, and then finish up by sitting back and reveling in our work. (granted mom always re-adorned the tree when we were at school, but like we ever noticed.) I can't wait until I have my own little helpers. I also plan to explain to those helpers as we decorate why we have the tree and what it symbolizes.
I love looking at the lights up on the houses in suburbia. So magical. Magical? how about pretty. I just like lights.
I love have a reason to talk about Jesus Christ all of the time. Not that I avoid it the rest of the year, but at least people don't think that I'm crazy right now. Right? huh...
I love waking up way too early on Christmas morning and sneak downstairs to look at the Christmas tree glowing so beautiful in the dark, casting delicious shadows on the wrapped boxes below. It's so fantastic. Now THAT is magical. It warms me up inside. (is it because I'm kinda artsy fartsy?)
I love singing. At this time of year i get to sing all day, everywhere I go. And again, nobody thinks i'm crazy. (or as crazy)
I love decorations. i left mine out last year for four months afterwards. Gotta celebrate Easter too. (and I was pregnant and tired and then they only got put away because we moved.)
I love trying to be anti-materialistic. The problem is, everything that I need in the time between my birthday and Christmas is saved for Christmas gifts. I like being "surprised." Maybe I just like opening giftwrap. Or maybe i never grew up from the age of 2 and i just really like to crinkle wrapping paper.
I love cheap stuff. And let's face it, stuff is never cheaper than this month. I bought the baby's birthday presents already. You know, for june. And i showed them to him because I can. Kinda nice to be done with that one.
Ok, so the last one doesn't really count. But it is nice to get prepared for the year when it costs half as much as later. It also makes it easier to save money. ahem. But that's because I hate shopping and i don't buy things unless I've convinced myself that i have to.
All who read this are welcome to comment on what they love most about the holiday season, regardless of religion. Are people nicer to you? Are they meaner and it makes it easier for you to hate others? Do you also like the inexpensive goods? Are there any traditions for your holiday (holy day, anybody?) that you love? Is it another good reason to destroy your children with too many toys and overstimulate them after loading them up with sugar only to take them over to your in-laws?
do share. and if not in my comments like I want, at least blog about it! Because that is what you ought to do during holidays. you know, write things that make you happy. Right?
